3DS eShop Improvements

- Once a title is released, a developer can add content to it through the eShop
- Nintendo believes more developers will now increase the amount of titles for the shop
- Publishers can provide demos to consumers
- These demos can be limited by the number of trials
- Over one million reviews have been contributed worldwide for titles on the eShop
- Can download software while 3DS is in sleep mode with the update
- This will put an end to users having to wait patiently while several software titles are downloading at the same time or while a title with a large-file size is downloading
- Access eShop through the Web
- This means you can get to the shop on PCs or smartphones
- Nintendo wants to solve the issue of information (including reviews) being restricted to the eShop only
- If a game receives high marks from consumers, a majority of people won’t know about it unless they access the shop on the 3DS; Nintendo wants to change this in the future
- Won’t be able to purchase software directly on your PC/smartphone at the beginning
- Take a photo of a QR code at the eShop by using the 3DS camera
- 3DS will then open that specific page on the eShop
- This function will be included in the system update in November
- Nintendo will allow consumers to buy software directly on their PC/smartphone

- USA: StreetPass opportunities are small; need to get a group together and they’ll have positive views of the feature
- Nintendo’s priority in 2011 is 3DS hardware sales, profitability sacrificed, want to grow 3DS into a core platform
- Big improvement in 3DS profitability next year; targeting 16 million units; conservative goal, not aggressive

- Nintendo will collaborate more with external developers since they can’t do everything internally; external companies better at network service

Metal Gears Solid HD Press Release

KONAMI’s five-game compilation sneaks on to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on February 3rd October 26th, 2011

Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH today confirmed the release date of its eagerly-awaited METAL GEAR SOLID HD Collection. The package, which features five classic METAL GEAR titles, will be released for PlayStation®3 and Xbox 360® on February 3rd, 2012.

Created by the critically acclaimed director, Hideo Kojima, METAL GEAR SOLID HD Collection showcases some of the most popular METAL GEAR SOLID titles in true HD for the first time. The compilation comprises five seminal games including METAL GEAR SOLID 2: SONS OF LIBERTY, METAL GEAR SOLID 3: SNAKE EATER, and METAL GEAR SOLID: PEACE WALKER in full HD, and also contains the two games that started it all: METAL GEAR and METAL GEAR 2: SOLID SNAKE, which were originally released for MSX more than 20 years ago. As such, METAL GEAR SOLID HD Collection offers old and new fans a chance to experience the epic game play, design and storytelling of the MGS franchise.

The METAL GEAR and METAL GEAR SOLID series are the seminal work of Hideo Kojima, Japan’s master game creator, and the progenitor of the stealth action game genre. Within the METAL GEAR SOLID HD Collection, users control a number of legendary characters from the METAL GEAR SOLID universe’s elite Special Forces units who are sent on solo sneaking missions through enemy installations, vast jungles, and into the thick of battle. Alone and surrounded by the enemy, the player will find their abilities pushed to the very limit – but there lies the secret behind the series’ popularity: the cerebral challenge of figuring out how to avoid confrontation where possible, and the thrill of sneaking through enemy territory undetected.

The METAL GEAR SOLID series is also known for its inter-linked storylines, which blends seamlessly with the gameplay. The scenarios are based on extensive research and incorporate the drama of actual developments in society. These elements have made the series what it is today: a mature work of entertainment that transcends national borders and the confines of video games, and one of the leading products of the Japanese content business – with the METAL GEAR SOLID HD Collection a stunning celebration of one of gaming’s true giants.

Mario Kart 7 Press Release

REDMOND, Wash.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– The upcoming Mario Kart™ 7 game for the portable Nintendo 3DS™ system delivers more than just a glasses-free 3D racing experience. Mario Kart 7 delivers frenetic racing fun by air, land and sea. Longtime fans of the franchise will encounter new features and customization options, while newcomers will love racing with their favorite Mushroom Kingdom characters against opponents near and far.

At the heart of Mario Kart is multiplayer racing. Using a broadband Internet connection or local wireless built into the Nintendo 3DS, players can race against their own friends or even against opponents worldwide. The new Community feature allows players to create groups with other Mario Kart fans while setting up specific rules to make customized racing environments. Easy setup allows players to quickly create a community and share with others via the StreetPass™ feature. Community leaderboards will also show the most up-to-date information from recent races. Solo players can race through the Grand Prix and Time Trial modes using either the Circle Pad layout or the motion-sensitive gyro controls of the system to steer their karts. The gyro controls also allow players to control their karts in a first-person perspective, a feature never before seen in the Mario Kart franchise.

Mario Kart 7 will also use StreetPass and SpotPass™ features built into the Nintendo 3DS system. Walking by other Mario Kart 7 players in real life with StreetPass enabled allows gamers to exchange racing scores, win/loss records, number of collected coins and other game data. With SpotPass enabled, players will be able to receive ghost data to race against. Up to seven ghosts can be downloaded at the same time, allowing for a full eight-player race. Additionally, a Mario Kart channel will be a central location for players to view information collected through StreetPass and SpotPass.

Every iteration of the Mario Kart series introduces new twists and turns, and this newest Mario Kart game is no different. New playable characters include Metal Mario from the Super Mario 64™ game and Lakitu, the spectacled cloud-riding Koopa. Players can also choose to race as their own Mii™ characters. New power-ups include the Fire Flower and Super Leaf. The Fire Flower allows players to throw blazing balls of fire at other drivers, while the Super Leaf makes the Tanooki Tail appear on the back of karts to knock other drivers and items out of the way. And, of course, the karts come equipped with gliders for maneuvering through the air and propellers for underwater propulsion.
The Mushroom Cup and Flower Cup introduce eight new courses, including ones on Wuhu Island and one created by Retro Studios set in the jungles from the Donkey Kong Country™ Returns game. The Shell Cup and Banana Cup feature eight classic courses, including Luigi’s Mansion from the Nintendo DS™ and Koopa Beach from the Nintendo 64™. There will be 16 new courses and 16 classic courses total.

REDMOND, Wash.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Nintendo 3DS™ and Wii™ owners will soon have the ability to access even more of their favorite TV shows and movies: the Hulu Plus service will be added to both systems by the end of the year. Nintendo is also announcing new features being added to the Nintendo 3DS system, including the ability to record 3D videos, new musical artists coming to Nintendo Video™ and a new animated 3D video from DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. Additionally, Nintendo 3DS owners will soon see four inventive downloadable Nintendo-published games and applications delivered to the Nintendo eShop, the portable one-stop shop for fun, cool and interesting entertainment options.

“Nintendo 3DS continues to evolve with great new features and functions designed to reinforce its position as a premiere entertainment device,” said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime.

“All of these features, in addition to great upcoming games like Pokémon Rumble Blast on Oct. 24, Super Mario 3D Land on Nov. 13 and Mario Kart 7 on Dec. 4, make Nintendo 3DS a smart gift option this holiday season.”

Hulu Plus also offers access to classic TV favorites like Lost, Battlestar Galactica, The Hills and hundreds of popular and award-winning movies. Hulu Plus is available through a separate subscription fee of $7.99 per month with limited advertising.

Nintendo 3DS System Update: At the end of November, a new system update will deliver a range of cool new features and enhancements, including 3D video capture, which will let users record up to 10 minutes of 3D video and enable people to create their own 3D stop-motion animation videos. The update will also add new puzzles to the StreetPass™ Mii Plaza™ and a new dungeon to Find Mii. Other features will be announced in the future.
